A language revitalization plan may include values that ground the plan in the important cultural teachings of the community. The values guide the way work is done and clarify priorities. Values may speak to the teachings of ancestors and can provide wisdom and strength in challenging situations.
Create an initial list of values using the following suggested steps:
- Review existing values or teachings that the community might already follow, such as cultural teachings or values included in other documents or community plans
- Meet with community members to hear what values they believe are important for the language planning process
- Discuss among the planning team the values that are shared
- Seek advice from Elders or Knowledge Keepers in the community
Narrow down the list of values with input from the community. Identify the values that are most relevant for the language plan.
